Claire Bonzani: Puzzles for a Purpose
The goal of this project was to better the effects of the elderly living with aphasia and other memory disorders. Puzzles are proven to help with these effects as well as being an enjoyable activity. I worked to bring a puzzle cart to a non profit nursing home in NYC called the Carnegie East House. All of the puzzles on the cart were researched and proven to help the elderly’s brain functions. I conducted sessions with residents at Carnegie East in order to ensure the puzzles were fun and helpful. Finally, I left a puzzle cart filled with donated puzzles, including crosswords, word puzzles and jigsaw puzzle. I also created a website, puzzlesforapurpose.weebly.com for more printout puzzles to restock the cart. |
Molly McGuinness: Reuse-Recycle-Rebuild!
My Gold Award project is mainly about upcycling, which is the using of recycled materials to recreate something that others could use for their own benefit. In my case, I rebuilt a bus shelter in my community that I had used for many years growing up. By repurposing wood that was from parts of the bus shelter itself, donations from the Home Depot in Brewster, and some wood from my neighbors, I was able to rebuild the bus shelter for the other kids in my community to use in the future like I did. Apart from rebuilding of the bus shelter, I conducted a few workshops involving craft projects one can do through the process of upcycling, such as cigar boxes for storage, or tin can wind chimes. |
Natalie Intrieri, Kaitlyn Thayer, Analisa Posa, Charlie Reiner: Operation Karen's Kids
The goal of this project was to help the organization, Friends of Karen, a non-profit community helping ill children and their families. We helped collect school supplies for their back to school program, and helped put together the Thanksgiving baskets full of Thanksgiving food items.
